Lumen

LUMEN RATING

Lumens are the standard unit of luminous flux, equal to the amount of light emitted per second in a unit solid angle of one steradian from a uniform source of one candela. Confused as I am? To summarize, more lumens make for brighter lights.

Below is Lezyne’s stand on light measurement and why we’ve taken this stand:
Currently, lumens in the marketplace are claimed in three different ways. The first (and most popular) way is based on the theoretical output of light with data given by the LED manufacturer (in which they state that at “X” current, the LED will produce “X” amount of light). The second method is based on the measuring units of lux, favoring lights with a narrow beam angle. This method is inaccurate because it matters mostly where you shine the light on the measuring devide and also how close you place the light to that device. The third method is based on ACTUAL measured light output using a calibrated integrating sphere. Lezyne chose to use the third method and does not rely on theoretical claims or manipulation, only true tested numbers.

LUX, CANDELA, LUMENS

Lux, candela, and lumens. What's the difference?

All three units of measurement have been used within the bike industry and because of this, we find it necessary to define all three.
- Lux is the measurement of light given at a certain point in the light's beam pattern.
- Candela is a unit of measurement equal to that of a single candle burning and giving off a specific amount of light in any direction. Candela measurement is not affected by distance, while lux is.
- Lumens are a perfect blend of both methods because it measures light that comes from every source and direction. It is all-inclusive.

BEAM VS. OUTPUT

led-tech-img4 Because we measure lumens in an integrating sphere, this means that we have a very accurate reading of a light’s output. However, this does not dismiss the importance of the light’s actual BEAM PATTERN. In light of this, we have created a range of lights that are not only powerful, but have a very well balanced beam pattern with little or no hot spots in their ranges. We call this our Uniform Power Beam.

INTEGRATING SPHERE

We test our lights using an integrating sphere. In short, an integrating sphere is a large sphere with a highly reflective interior that you point a light into and the total amount of light within the sphere is measured. An integrating sphere may be thought of as a diffuser, which preserves power but destroys spatial information.

Technology

UNIFORM POWER BEAM

led-tech-img4 Lezyne LED Lights utilize a mirror-finish reflector dish to project brighter light in the center of the beam. The reflector dish, in combination with the front lens, creates a beam pattern that illuminates objects near and far. This engineered distribution of uniform light avoids creating a harsh hot spot and gives the rider more useful light over the entire beam pattern.

CNC ALUMNUM

Lezyne LED Lights feature CNC-machined aluminum bodies and screw-caps. The all aluminum body provides great durability and efficient heat dissipation, which is crucial for LED run times, as heat drastically reduces LED run times.

INFINTE LIGHT

Lezyne uses high-quality, industry-standard lithium-ion batteries. Our lights allow batteries to be exchanged on demand. Put simply, if you're going on a long ride, simply carry an extra battery or two so you can keep riding. You can now ride forever, assuming that your legs can keep up.

I used the lithium-ion battery only for a short time. Should I nevertheless charge it again immediately? Or rather use it again and discharge it?

If your next ride will not be no longer than the remaining capacity of the battery, do not charge the battery immediately. A battery's life is determined by the number of charging cycles. No matter how big or small a charge is, it's recognized by the battery as such. So avoid charging the battery unless it is really necessary.

How do I store a lithium-ion battery for several months?

A lithium-ion battery will lose some of its capacity if it is not stored correctly, but no matter what, the loss of some charge is to be expected. Store the battery at about a 50% charge in a cool room or shaded room or in an air-tight casing in the fridge in order to prevent water damege.

My battery won't charge any more. What might be the cause and what can I do?

You battery might simply be old and need replacing. It might also have some water damage. If this is the case, or even if you’re unsure, get in touch with us on the Contact page.

How often can I recharge a lihium-ion battery and what is the life expectancy?

The best rule for making the most of your battery life is to charge your battery only when it is almost empty. Charging the battery after every short-time use will shorten its life span.

Are your lights waterproof?

The easy and most accurate answer to this question is YES. Our lights are waterproof. With proper care and use, the light will remain waterproof. It will stand up to rain, snow and mud too. It will outlast everything you can throw at it.

How many lux do your lights produce?

We do not measure our lights with Lux.

Most manufacturers measure total light output by measuring lux, which is the measurement of light given at any single point. This method is inaccurate as it matters mostly where you put the light as well as how far away the light is from the lux measuring measuring tool. Using an integrating sphere is the truest and most accurate measurement of ACTUAL light output.

What is the life expectancy of your LEDs?

LED technology is so good these days that they have an almost unlimited life. It is more likely that the LED will outlast you rather than vice versa.

How does Lezyne determine lumen values?

Lezyne determines lumens by using what is called an integrating sphere to measure light output. This method is based around the measurement of ACTUAL light output. This method is based around the measurement of ACTUAL light output.

Lumens in short, is the TOTAL amount of light given off by a light regardless of that light's beam pattern. Using an integrating sphere is the truest and most accurate measurement of ACTUAL light output because it takes into consideration all factors.

Which LEDs does Lezyne use in its lights?

Lezyne uses only the best LED technology in its lights. For us, every light that we develop uses an application specific LED. For this reasin, we have not associated ourself with a single LED manufacturer. This leaves us open to continue developing the best lights on the market with no ties or restrictions to anybody. In short, we use the best.
